Boost Sales by Feeding the Instant Gratification Addiction

Boost Sales by Feeding the Instant Gratification Addiction

Thanks to the Internet, it now takes all of 10 seconds to verify that it was Meryl Streep’s character, Suzanne Vale, in the 1990 film “Postcards From the Edge,” who said the line, “Instant gratification takes too long.”

There was a time when, even if you knew what movie the line was from, it could have taken you an hour or more with a trip to the video store (remember those?) to find the names of the actress and her character. If you didn’t know the name of the movie, it could be a frustrating day of asking friends, video store clerks, and random strangers, “What movie was it where what’s-her-name said…”

Instant gratification, indeed. As a society, we have grown accustomed to this type of instant access—including access to your website. Studies show that if your site takes longer than three seconds to load—less than the time it takes to read this sentence—40 percent of visitors will give up and go elsewhere. For every additional second of load time, more visitors will bail out. Especially in the case of e-commerce sites, low load speeds can cost a lot of money.

Going Mobile: Optimizing Your Site for Mobile Devices

If you’ve ever tried to use a regular web site on a smartphone or tablet, you know how aggravating it can be: you have to zoom in to read the thing, but then you have to swipe back and forth and every which way to see it all. It’s enough to make you go back to an old-school “dumb” phone. (Well, maybe not…those smartphones sure are addictive, aren’t they?)

If you have a web site and a significant chunk of your visitors are viewing it on mobile devices, it’s worth your while to think about optimizing it for mobile browsing. This means designing pages specifically for small screens and big fingers. This is distinguished from mobile apps, which are standalone programs that users download and install on their devices.

7 Signs Your Website Needs a Serious Spring Cleaning

We all have busy lives. Our careers, families, hobbies and other obligations might have overwhelmed us and we simply have not had the time to update our websites the way that we should. Oh, sure — the internet is constantly evolving. Not six months can go by without some kind of major digital innovation, so maybe jumping up and refreshing your website every two seconds is only time wasted, since it will probably look dated in a month anyway.

But wait, your website is “best viewed on Internet Explorer 5.0!” Hoo, boy.

Alright, maybe it’s time for you to take stock of your website and finally enter the 21st century, a mere 14 years late. Now, we don’t want to fix what isn’t broken, but if your website still boasts one (or all) of the following seven features, we’d like to strongly suggest that your site isn’t earning you the kind of money, traffic or attention it could.
